There is bound to be conflict when religion meets politics in the fight for wageworking justice, personified by the preacher Lucas and Professor Schliemann themselves. In Schliemann’s lecture, Schliemann begins by addressing the role religion plays in the exploit of men in the capitalistic society. Religion is harnessed by the government when it “oppressed his mind, and poisoned the stream of progress at its source,” as the “Archfiend’s deadliest weapon.” The Archfiend is the top wealthiest percentage of white-collared big men who are supported by government in their exploitive endeavors. Schliemann is merciless in his diatribe against the usage of religion.
While Schliemann treats religion as a purposefully-swung sword, Lucas treats religion as a misfired gun — inculpable to the crimes the wielder himself commits. Lucas argues that religion is not the source of evil — the poison Schliemann speaks of. Jesus is the father of Socialism and is the first to fight off the oppression of those who seek to exploit the lower class, according to Lucas. Schliemann only allows him Jesus as the only exception of the oppression caused by religion. When Schliemann refuses to excuse religion, Lucas questions his idea of maintaining the moral righteousness of a society without the presence of religion.
Thus, Lucas and Schliemann finds common ground — in their belief in socialism. Schliemann explains that socialism is eventually leads to moral righteousness. When greed is taken out of the equation and when the workingman works under free labor, tasks will no longer be repulsive and debasing, even such tasks will no longer be performed.
Though both men disagree on the role religion plays in current society, both agree that socialism is the answer of the future. Under socialism, the archfiend of the wealthy ten percent and government will be gone; therefore, the archfiend’s deadliest weapon, be it religion or not, will too cease to exist.
